Fair, James Conroy 1909-10

Born 7th August 1891 Balvanera, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Son of Thomas Conroy Fair, Merchant, and Catherine L. (nee Reid). Baptised 6th October 1891 St. John's Cathedral, Buenos Aires. The Fair family were originally from Coldstream, Berwickshire. His father died when he was only 6 years old on 29th September 1897. 2nd Lt. Coldstream Guards WW1. Family lived at Woodside, Walton-by-Clevedon, Somerset. Killed in action 28th September 1915 Loos, France. He was shot by a German sniper while bringing in a wounded man at Loos. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial. Roll of Honour at St John's Church, Clevedon and the Walton St Mary Roll of Honour. His brother George Patrick Fair, of the Somerset Light Infantry, was also killed in action 9 months later.


Fairbanks, Walter 1875-76 Born 13th April 1852 Luton, Chatham, Kent. Son of Rev. Joseph Henry Fairbanks and Susan Jane (nee ?). Christened 26th July 1852 at St Mary's, Chatham. Clifton College 1869-71. Clare College Cambridge 1871-1874. Rugby Blue 1873, 1874. Assistant Master Clifton College 1875-96. US Golfer. In 1919 living at Bayford Vicarage, Hereford. Died 25th August 1924 Penybot, Guildford, Surrey.
Fanshawe, Maurice 1902-03 Born 20th February 1883 Clifton, Bristol. Son of Reginald Fanshawe, Professor of Latin and Greek, Bristol University. Clifton College 1896-1902 (Head boy 1900-1901). Queen's College, Oxford. Education Service of the Admiralty WW1. Admiralty War Staff. Political Intelligence Department of the Foreign Office. Died 17th July 1956 Hampstead, London.
Fargus, Harold ?

Born 15th February 1873 Clifton, Bristol. Brother of Archibald. Clifton College 1883-1891. Occasionally played for Clifton 1892-94. Played in first ever match played at the Fishponds ground v Taunton. Brigadier-General in Army. Married, 7 October 1899, at Clifton, Bristol, Alice Gertrude Evans, daughter of J L Evans. Died 28th December 1962 at Cranford Nursing Home, Cranford Avenue, Exmouth, Devon.

Born 15th December 1878 Clifton, Bristol. Son of novelist Frederick John Fargus (aka Hugh Conway), and Amy (nee Spark). Brother of Harold. Clifton College 1891. Hailbury College. Pembroke College, Cambridge. Glos CCC. Canon St. Paul's Cathedral, Valetta, Malta. Chaplain at Huelva, Spain, 1923-5. Living at Horfield rectory, Bristol, in 1941. Died 6th October 1963 Eastville, Bristol.


Fayle, Disney Benjamin William 1909-10 Born 18th November 1888 India. Son of Robert James Leech Fayle, and Mary (nee ?). Brother of Barry. Clifton College 1899-1907. Edge Tool Manufacturing, Coaley, Glos. Married 1919 Joyce Geraldine M Parkes in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Died 1967.
Fayle, Barcroft Joseph Leech 1912-13

Born 21st July 1890. Devonport, Devon. Brother of Disney. Clifton College 1899-1907. Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Surgeon. Bristol General Hospital. Killed in Action 24th October 1916 by a shell whilst tending wounded men in the trenches between Lesboeufs and Flers, to the south of Bapaume, France during the Battle of the Somme. Buried London Cemetery, Longueval.

Buried 10th January 1920 Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver.

Born 29th June 1864 Cardiff, Wales. Only son of Nelson Fedden, Managing Director Bottle Works, and Annie (nee Allen) of Saltford. Cousin of Alfred, Robert and Clement. Emigrated Australia 1887. Married 12th September ? Marion Stevens Chester at Holy Trinity Church, Williamstown, Victoria, Australia. Died 19th June 1943 Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

Married 1897 Florence Sophia Plowright Bell in Hampshire. Solicitor. Died 9th January 1947 Bromley Cottage Hospital.

Field, Samuel Cuming 1886-87 Born 1860 Oxford. Son of Francis Field, Oxford College Land Steward, and Anne (nee Hayward). Brewer Married 1894 Mary Douglas Lace in Bedminster, Bristol. His wife was the sister of the Clifton player Edward Douglas Lace. Died 4th April 1940 at 28 Forester Road, Bath, Somerset.  
Firth, Arthur 1880-81 Born 13th February 1862 Sheffield, Yorkshire. Son of John Firth, Steel and Iron Manufacturer, and Charlotte Frances (nee Harding). Clifton College 1875. Solicitor. Married 19th August 1886 Sarah Jane Smith. Died 1943 (possibly Newton Abbot, Devon). Daughter was the Violet Mary Firth, author and occultist, known by the pseudonyn Dion Fortune (the family motto was Deo, non fortuna" (Latin for "by God, not fate")). Family were Christian Scientists.

Head of Chemistry Department. Head of Science. Married 1911 Constance Isabel Boyd. Manager Explosives Factory WW1. Senior Science Master Eton. Headmaster Oundle School. Arested by US Military Police while bird watching near Polebrook Airfield, Northants and having no id on him. Died 3rd October 1945.

Fry, Leslie Harrington 1913-14

Born 25th January 1893 Paddington, London. Son of Charles Alfred Harrington Fry, Tea and Coffee Merchant, and Kate Harrington (nee Clarke). Related to Albert and George. Marlborough College. Clare College, Cambridge. Killed in Action 8th August 1918 in the early stages of the Allied advance to victory, which began from their positions just to the east of Amiens. Buried at Delve Military Cemetery.
